2015 Alcohol Awareness Month

The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence declares each April to be Alcohol Awareness Month. Each year the council chooses an alcohol awareness theme.

This year’s theme is “For the Health of It: Early Education on Alcoholism and Addiction.” Accordingly, the organization is emphasizing the importance of reducing underage drinking.

How NCADD Brings Focus to Underage Alcohol Awareness

Just as they do in other years, the organization will sponsor activities aimed at getting the word out on the dangers of underage drinking. Various community organizations throughout the country will host events to educate the public. People attending events may be encouraged to seek help with addiction issues.

Why Is Underage Drinking a Problem?Underage Drinking

Teens who drink alcohol tend to engage in a variety of risky behaviors like drinking and driving or having unprotected sex. Sometimes violence goes hand-in-hand with drinking. Kids may neglect responsibilities at school and their personal relationships may suffer. All of these detrimental effects can happen even if the teen never develops a dependence on alcohol.

Early Education Can Stop Addiction Before It Starts

Teens are young. Many of them are just beginning to make decisions on their own, and too often they are willing to take unreasonable risks. Sometimes teens just don’t understand the gravity of the potential consequences they might face when drinking alcohol. Statistics show that when people begin consuming alcohol after the age of 21, they are less likely to develop dependence. However, people who begin using alcohol before turning 15 are about five times more likely to develop alcoholism.

Early Prevention and Perseverance

Discouraging underage drinking is an ongoing process. It begins before youths take their first sip of alcohol and continues even after the completion of a rehabilitation program. Education must be the initial step to fighting underage alcohol use.
