Keys to Healthy Aging

Happy Healthy Aging Month!

September is the time we draw attention to how individuals can promote healthy aging and live full, quality lives in their senior years.

Today, we’re sharing some key ways that adults 65+ (or nearing that age) can promote their own healthy aging.

Aging Healthily

Vaccinations

Immunizations aren’t just for infants and school-aged children. Adults 65+ are particularly vulnerable to vaccine-preventable illnesses and their complications. For example, the influenza can cause dangerous complications in the elderly, so the flu shot is a must every year.

Aging adults are also recommended to get the following vaccinations, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • Shingles (or herpes zoster): one dose after age 60
  • Pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine: after age 65

Cancer Screening

Cancer is the biggest health risks facing adults 55-65, as it is the #1 cause of death. Risk for many cancers increases with age, so adults in that age range should get screened for these cancers as follows:

  • Cervical: women 55-65 can get screened every 3 years in conjunction with a pap smear
  • Breast: women 55-74 should have a mammogram every other year
  • Colorectal: adults 50-75 should be screened each year

Watch Your Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is a silent killer of older adults, since often no warning signs accompany the condition. It can lead to serious issues like stroke and heart failure. It’s key that adults monitor their blood pressure and take steps to maintain healthy levels. These can include:

  • Eating well
  • Maintaining a good weight
  • Exercising
  • Stopping smoking
  • Limiting alcohol consumption
  • Preventing or controlling diabetes

Arthritis & Osteoporosis

Arthritis and osteoporosis are two conditions that affect aging populations. Certain lab tests can reveal whether you should be concerned about your bone or joint health. If necessary, you can take the appropriate steps to prevent or treat arthritis and osteoporosis.
