First Ebola Diagnosis in the United States Raises Concern

ebolaAfter being sent home from the hospital two days before, Liberian national Eric Duncan returned to the hospital in critical care on Tuesday, September 30th. Upon arrival, American health officials identified this incident as the first-ever case of Ebola in the United States — something Americans should take very seriously.

What Happened

On September 30th, Eric Duncan, who was then in critical condition, was rushed to a Dallas hospital by ambulance. Upon arrival, the man was diagnosed with Ebola. What’s most concerning about this situation? Days before, the man was sent home from Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas after he had disclosed his recent visit to Liberia with the hospital’s health officials. Not only was this vital information not shared with the appropriate hospital officials, but the infected man was sent home with what health professionals considered to be a mild viral infection.

As a result of this tragic error in judgment, this man is now in critical but stable condition, while being treated for Ebola. Furthermore, approximately 100 people who may have been potentially exposed to the infected man are now under close observation for any signs of the deadly virus.

Why is Ebola Serious?

Ebola is a serious virus that has already taken the lives of approximately 3,000 West African citizens. When people are diagnosed, they are already exhibiting the symptoms. What makes Ebola especially dangerous is the fact that symptoms progress in severity rapidly, often resulting in death.

Symptoms of Ebola:

  • Fever
  • Intense gastrointestinal complications – diarrhea and vomiting
  • Muscular pain
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Weakness
  • Unexplained bruising and bleeding

Protect Your Health

Although Ebola is not airborne and is only transmitted through contact with the bodily fluids — blood and saliva — of an infected person, it is still contagious. If you are exhibiting signs of Ebola or have been in contact with an infected person, seek medical treatment immediately.
