The Basics on Diabetes

November is known as a food-focused month due to the Thanksgiving feast that occurs in most homes on the fourth Thursday. But it has other ties to food as well.

November is also Diabetes Awareness Month, the perfect time for people to learn more about the metabolic diseases known as Diabetes mellitus.

We’re sharing the basic information you need to know about diabetes, including how you can reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes 101: What You Need to Know

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus, more commonly known as diabetes, is the collective name for the group of metabolic disorders characterized by high blood sugars over extended periods. Symptoms include the need to urinate frequently, thirstiness, and hunger. When left untreated, diabetes causes several complications, including some immediately life-threatening conditions and long-term issues such as kidney failure, heart disease, stroke, and eye damage.

There are 3 main forms of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational.

What Causes Diabetes?Test Smartly Labs Shares The Basics on Diabetes

The causes of diabetes vary depending upon the form of the disease. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas fails to produce the right amount of insulin to properly regulate blood sugars. In type 2, cells begin to develop insulin resistance, often due to excessive weight gain and lack of exercise. Gestational diabetes occurs when a pregnant woman’s insulin receptors fail to function correctly. Genetics play a role in both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and lifestyle is a major factor in type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes Prevention

While there are no known preventative measures for type 1 and gestational diabetes, there are ways to lower your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. These include:

  • Maintaining a healthy body weight
  • Exercising regularly
  • Eating well (increasing  whole grains, fiber, and polyunsaturated fats such as those found in nuts and fish, and avoiding sugar, red meat, and saturated fat)
  • Quitting smoking

Monitoring your health for signs of prediabetes or diabetes will help you identify and address any health concerns and pursue treatment.
