Why Participate in the Teal Pumpkin Project™?

Think of your favorite Halloween memories from your childhood.

Chances are they involve costumes, pumpkin carving, trick-or-treating, and lots and lots of candy.

For the 1 in 13 children who have food allergies, though, Halloween can have a less-happy association: the time spent sorting through the candy bucket and tossing out the treats that can’t be consumed.

Food Allergy Research & Education (FARE) has taken steps to change the holiday for these kids, making it more inclusive and friendly for those with food allergies. Here’s how.

The Teal Pumpkin Project™

FARE’s response to the increase in food allergies is the Teal Pumpkin Project™. They’re encouraging households across the US to participate by having non-food items on hand to pass out to trick-or-treaters that suffer from food allergies.

The program started last year and has grown, with an estimated 100,000 households set to take part this year.

Make Halloween Fun for Kids With Food Allergies

Considering the vast range of reactions to food allergies, from itching and rashes to anaphylaxis and even death, it’s imperative that children with these conditions don’t come into contact with their allergens.

To show children with food allergies a fun time, you can take part in the Teal Pumpkin Project™.  Before Halloween, make sure to add your name to the official pledgeplace your address on the map, download a printable sign for your door, and place a painted teal pumpkin on your porch to signal your participation.

You also need to grab a supply of non-food items to share on Halloween. Here are a few ideas:

  • Temporary tattoos
  • Whistles
  • Playing cards
  • Bouncy balls

Get Your Child Tested for Food Allergies

Many of the major food allergies can be problematic for kids around Halloween, including nut, wheat, eggs, soy, or milk. If you’re not sure whether you or you child has a food allergy, you could be at risk when you bite into your candy bar.

We recommend that you get yourself and your kid(s) tested for food allergies so that you know if there are any risks. Our wellness-certified locations offer comprehensive food allergy panels so you can identify what foods and additives can cause reactions or even prove fatal.
